Fr. Tom Shuler
Thomas Shuler is a priest of the Archdiocese of Atlanta and pastor of Our Lady of the Mount Catholic Church in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. Ordained June 8, 2013, at 69 years of age (the oldest ordinand that year) he was appointed pastor immediately upon ordination. Father Shuler was ordained a permanent deacon for the Archdiocese in 1995 and served on the fulltime staff at Atlanta’s Holy Spirit Catholic Church until entering Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Massachusetts, in September 2011.
Father Shuler was married for thirty-five years to Sandra Nelson Shuler until her death from breast cancer in 2007. He has a daughter, Ashley, and her husband, Adriaan, and a twelve year-old granddaughter, Sophie.
Father Shuler attended Louisiana State University, graduating in January 1968 with a degree in music education. Having grown up as a Baptist, Father Shuler became Catholic in 1965 while a student at LSU. He received his master’s degree in education from the University of Louisiana, Monroe, in 1972, and a master’s in theology from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia in 2004, where he subsequently completed several courses for a doctor of ministry. Aside from enjoying Scripture and ecclesiology, Father Shuler maintains a deep interest in ecumenism and the theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, having been a long time member of the International Bonhoeffer Society.
